Our Work

A second generation family-owned winery.

Uncomplicated and no slave to tradition. Experimental and with curiosity. With passion and enthusiasm. Hand-crafted. Sustainability and respect for nature. Exclusively own grape material which came from 37 small plots.
Only us and our own vineyards.

Organic viticulture: sustainable and versatile. Leaving nature as it is. Intercropping. Cover crops. Water areas. It is worth it to respect nature and just to let it be. Our vineyards are wild places, with buzzing, twittering, growth, vitality. This earth is precious.

Terroir

The Wagram region.

Loam and loess, several metres in depth. Million year- old tertiary gravel. A soil that acts like sponge; soft and fertile with outstanding water retention. The promising region. Undiscovered and unknown. Best requirements as the Veltliner’s and also the Pinot Noir’s region of origin. Loose calcareous soil for burgundian conditions. The infamous Wagram leaves its impermeable mark on both the landscape and the wine. Mutual respect for both white and red wines.

Pfaffenberg

On the natural border between Kremstal and the Wachau. One of the best sites in Austria for Riesling. It has Wachau “terroir”, with prehistoric stone terraces, steep and harsh. Bedrock soil with pockets of less topsoil. A real jewel.

Artisan

Hand-crafted sounds dirty – and it is.

Handmade with historic basket press. Barrel-matured. Concrete egg. Authentic and natural. Wines that are completely genuine, without frills. Not fussy. Not standardised. Dry. Spontaneous fermentation instead of cultured yeasts. To challenge ourselves over playing it safe. That‘s notalways easy, but it’s worth it in the long term. Minimal intervention.

Because sometimes less really is more.

Aged in stainless steel, wooden barrels or concrete.

Slow and gentle pressing. Vinification in a variety of containers for a precise, terroir-related palate with substance and finesse. Sometimes unfiltered.

Rosé Cuvée Donauschotter

Pinot Noir and Sankt Laurent grapes hand-picked specifically for the production of Rosé. A francophile wine to drink all year round from the best grapes. Spontaneously fermented, dry, elegant and animating.

 

Grüner Veltliner Lössling

Vintage: 2015
Volume: 0.75 l

Grüner Veltliner Lössling: Different but equal in quality. A new kind of Veltliner. Undertones of clay and loess. This is what Wagram’s creamy mellow fruit tastes like. Gentle long-term pressing, spontaneously fermented. 10 months on the fine lees. Large cask, concrete egg. The name says it all.

Grüner Veltliner Schreck

Volume: 0.75 l

Schreck – a typical Grüner Veltliner. Cool finesse, Burgundian appeal. Minerality. Clay, loess and gravel. Makes itself scarce, if it gets too cold. Gentle long-term pressing. Large cask, concrete egg. Spontaneously fermented. 10 months on the fine lees.

Riesling Rosen

Exotic. Riesling Rosen:  Characterised by balance and equilibrium. Vibrant acidity. Red tertiary gravel.  High minerality. Surprisingly exotic. Long pressing time, spontaneous fermentation. Steel tank and concrete egg.

Pinot Noir Hengst

Pinot Noir Hengst: A grape diva made from the warmth of the day and the cool nights. Matured 1 year in a small Burgundy cask and in the 500 liter cask. Spontaneously fermented. Unfilitered. Natural. Elegance and finesse.

Riesling Pfaff

Riesling Pfaff: Elegant, mineral, profound purity. No botrytis notes. Steep terraces and 35-year-old vines. Including long aging on fine yeast and spontaneous fermentation. Austrian Riesling at its best.

Riesling Pfaff Privat

Vintage: 2015
Volume: 0.75 l

Pfaff privat: Balanced residual sweetness. A wine of vision. Strictly limited. Typical of the variety, mirror image of its terroir. Grapes of highest ripeness, no botrytis notes, pressed carefully. Just pure and genuine Riesling. Including fine lees aging und spontaneous fermentation.

Riesling Donauschotter

A Riesling with a refined aroma and a deliberately dry finish. Harvested by hand, spontaneously fermented and bottled pure without any processing. A perfect combination of aroma and acidity.

Grüner Veltliner Donauschotter

About an old cellar and new technology.

We discovered an old basket press and restored it. So now we’re using it again. Just like the old cellar which back then was constructed in the depths and cooled by groundwater. We’ve extended it. Equipped it with new technology. We’ve fitted it out with different vessels made of steel, wood and concrete to experiment. Now, it’s energy self-sufficient. Unusual, unconventional and modest. Perfect harmony.
